August 10, 2019 | Gorgeous~ Blue Moon Valley under Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

We took a bus to get to Yulong Naxi Autonomous County at noon. Lots of tour groups were behind me in the photo.

Blue Moon Valley actually is an extremely blue river meandering through a lush valley of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Seen from a distance, it resembles a blue crescent moon inlaid at the foot of the mountain. That’s how the place got its beautiful name! However, blue is not the only colour of the river. If it rains, the white mud and limestone rubble at the riverbed will be swirled up, making the water as white as milk. Therefore, local Naxi people name it White Water River (Baishui River).

Joseph Francis Charles Rock, a botanist, adventurer and linguist from United States spent 27 years in Lijiang in the early 20th century. He was devoted to studying the Dongba Culture and also wrote a lot of travel notes about the landscape of Lijiang. Rock left the world a wealth of detailed information and pictures of the White Water River and Blue Moon Valley, which inspired the British writer James Hilton to create the world “Shangri-La” in his novel “Lost Horizon”.

Fantastic! How fortunate of us to appreciate the highest peak – Shanzidou without being obscured by rain or fog during the monsoon!
And… What a piece of luck that we successfully captured the rarely-seen Lenticular clouds over the top of the sacred mountain!
