June 28 | Another Beautiful Day – Yu Garden & City God Temple & Shanghai Tower

A nice mall selling my favorite macarons was found nearby the hotel~

The beautiful morning started with the taste of a double scroop matcha ice cream.

Our lunch – the third time during our trip that we had Japanese dishes. But I was still crazy about the delicacies!

We visited Yu Garden after lunch. Without a guide, it was hard to us to find the entrance to it, for we were totally confused by the broken Baidu map.

Yu Garden, aka Yuyuan Garden, Yu Yuan in Chinese, is a classical garden ranking among the must-see attractions in Shanghai. It dates back to the Ming Dynasty and was owned by a government officer named Pan Yunduan. Yu in Chinese means pleasing and satisfying, and this garden was specially built for Pan’s parents as a place for them to enjoy a tranquil and happy time in their old age.

It is the most celebrated classical Chinese Garden in Shanghai downtown area. It also enjoys the reputation of “the crown of beauty in Southeast China”, offering charming and pleasant views. Visiting Yu Garden is just like visiting the exquisite Humble Administrator’s Garden in Suzhou which listed as the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I took a cute dorayaki from Hana’s Dorayaki (章台柳铜锣烧).

Enjoying the tasty snack in the bamboo grove of Yu Garden was probably one of the refreshing moments in life.

The artistic conception comes from a poem –

The adjacent Yuyuan Bazaar is good for a browse for the antiques, arts, crafts, souvenirs, etc. If you like, taste some local snacks here.

For us, a trip to Yuyuan Bazaar was a treasure hunt, with surprises around every corner, all destined for those we loved most. Dad bought lots of shortcakes, biscuits and chocolate he liked. I also took all that I wanted.

In addition to the original vanilla flavour, new flavours such as ice cream, chocolate, coffee, red bean and yogurt have been added.

With a rich history spanning over 600 years, the City God Temple is a major attraction in Shanghai. Exhibiting magnificent architecture, the site is a main Taoist temple honoring the city gods of Shanghai. Part of the walled old city, the temple is adjacent to the renowned Yu Garden and the bustling Yuyuan Tourist Mart.

Old City God Temple enjoys a high status in Shanghai, with an old saying: one who fails to reach the temple never reaches Shanghai. City God Temple was built to protect the safety of the people in the city, and the gods are regarded as patron saints in Taoism.

? I just couldn’t remember why I ate another ice cream that day, since the photos showed I had already had so much food.

That night we had a visit to Shanghai Tower (Height: 632 m).

Shanghai Tower is in Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone of Pudong, with Shanghai World Financial Center to the east and Jin Mao Tower to the north. The tower ranks as China’s tallest building and second only to the world at large.

Shanghai Tower Observation Deck

Location: 118th Floor
Height: 546 meters

For tourists, a Shanghai Tower visit would not be completed unless including a climb to the ‘Top of Shanghai Observatory’, which is the world’s highest indoor observation deck. From this height, one can enjoy a unique panoramic view of the Huangpu River, the Bund on the west, and several other skyscrapers like the Jin Mao Tower and the World Financial Center on the east bank. Tourists are recommended to visit the exhibition hall on floor B1 first, and then take the express elevator to the 118th floor directly within only 55 seconds. At last, see the exhibition of ‘Shanghai Eye’ on the 125th and 126th floors if time permits.

I bought some souvenirs at Shanghai Tower for my dearest sister. The artistic coasters and bookmarks were not only beautiful, but also practical.

The supper at Smiley Peat Garden along the Bund was perfect and relaxing!
